Derrick Hodgson

Derrick Hodgson is a Toronto based artist and illustrator. His focus is in the application and development of character design.

The majority of his imagery is based on his experiences growing up in a small rural community north of Toronto and relating these experiences to the expanding urban environment he finds himself in at present.

His recent work deals with a theme of rural meets urban and the urge to gain control over our future in relation to an escalating loss of nature. In this work, complex social spaces are crowded with somewhat real and mutated characters. Using repetition of character illustrates ideas of technological advancement and the consequences of such advancement.

Aesthetically he combines aspects of cartoon, graffiti and contemporary design to produce his own illustrative style.

Derrick has been working freelance with a wide range of clients for the past 9 years, and has participated in a number of solo and group shows in galleries worldwide.

Derrick most recently spoke at the 2nd annual Pictoplasma Conference on Contemporary Character Design in Berlin Germany.
