Gabe Sawhney
Gabe is co-founder of Echo Mobile, a technologist, producer, artist, entrepreneur and activist working in mobile, web, video and interactive installation.
Gabe is co-founder, technical director and producer of [murmur], the celebrated location-based audio documentary, available in eight cities in four countries on three continents. [murmur] was a finalist for the Canadian New Media Awards, the Heritage Toronto Awards, and two Toronto Art Awards.
Working with Xenophile, Gabe was lead programmer and IVR developer for both seasons of the ReGenesis Alternate Reality Game, which was a winner of two Canadian New Media Awards, a Gemini award, and an Interactive Emmy award.
Gabe is co-founder of Wireless Toronto, a volunteer community wireless group that helps small businesses and managers of public spaces to offer free wireless Internet access to their visitors. A driving factor behind Wireless Toronto is the goal of delivering contextually-relevant information through the development of community portal pages.
Gabe is on the mobile committee of Interactive Ontario, the board of directors of Heritage Toronto, and the membership committee of InterAccess. Gabe has spoken at conferences in Canada, the US, the UK and Brazil. He blogs occasionally at wirelesstoronto.ca/blog and wirelessnorth.ca.
Gabe studied architecture, film and semiotics at the University of Toronto, was a resident at the CFC Media Lab in 2002, and is currently an instructor of interactive design at the Ontario College of Art and Design.
