Get up to speed in the latest version of Flash quickly and painlessly!

Who is this course for?
Any user of Flash CS4 who needs to get up to speed on the basic special effects capabilities of Flash in less than half an hour.

  • Masks
Masks allow you to selectively hide and reveal content, by defining visible areas. Masks in Flash are extremely versatile, and in this lesson we learn how to create and apply them on our timelines.
  • Color Effects
Color effects are a long-standing type of special effect in Flash, dating to the earliest days of the technology. But, combining alpha and tint features, color effects are also quite useful and still probably the single most commonly applied type of special effect in Flash. In this lesson we learn what all types of color effects are and how to use them.
  • Filters
Filters are the class of special effects in Flash that include drop shadows, blurs, glows, gradient glows, and color shifts. They add tremendous depth to our Flash experiences, and can be combined, stacked, copied and pasted throughout your Flash document. In this lesson we learn how to employ filters in our Flash movies.
  • Blends
Blend modes have long been a feature of other raster editing tools like Adobe PhotoShop and Adobe Fireworks, but were only relatively recently added to Flash. In this lesson we cover what blend modes Flash supports, examine a sample file illustrating all the blend modes, and learn how to apply them to MovieClips in our Flash movies.
  • 9-Slice
One thing Flash, as a vector format, has always done really well is scale -- after all, vectors are infinitely zoomable. However, the way Flash scales our content by default isn't always what we're looking for. In this lesson we learn how to apply 9-Slice to MovieClips in our Flash movies to control how our content scales.
  • 3D Effects
3D effects are brand new to Flash CS4, with the introduction of the concept of z-space inside of the Flash authoring tool. In this lesson we learn how to use the new 3D Rotation and 3D Transformation tools to achieve stunning 3-dimensional special effects in our Flash movies.
  • Text Effects
Flash content is extremely versatile, and text in Flash is just like any other content in Flash. In this final short lesson, we discuss how text in Flash can be manipulated with these same special effects that we have learned to apply to other types of content inside of Flash.
